Recent leadership decisions – summer 2022

The following are key actions taken by the ACAAI Board of Regents and Executive Committee during the months of June and July.

  • Modified the ACAAI Conflict of Interest Policy as proposed to prohibit members who are employed by industry from serving on College committees or taskforces when their employer produces or markets products directly related to the work of the committee/task force.
  • Appointed Kathleen May, MD, FACAAI, Gailen Marshall, Jr., MD, PhD, FACAAI and Todd Mahr, MD, FACAAI as the College’s three representatives to International Collaboration in Asthma, Allergy and Immunology (iCAALL) through 2024.
  • Ratified the President’s decision to forward comments from the ACAAI Food Allergy Committee to the FDA in response to their draft guidance titled: Evaluating the Public Health Importance of Food Allergies Other Than the Major Food Allergens Listed in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
  • Accepted the unaudited Financial Statements for the period ending 4/30/22.
  • Approved funding for treatment updates to the four existing Shared Decision-Making tools.
  • Ratified the Executive Medical Director’s decision to provide Kate Barcal with the College’s 2022 Executive Medical Director Award.
  • Approved funding in the 2022 budget for digitization of ACAAI Archive assets.
  • Approved the applications recommended by the Credentials Committee for Fellowship, Promotion to Fellowship, Member, Scientific Fellowship, Allied Health, Fellow-in-Training and Resident/Medical Student Membership.
  • Approved the Credentials Committee’s recommendations for Retired and Emeritus Status as presented.
  • Ratified the Annals Editor-in-Chief’s appointment of Francesca Levi-Schaffer, PhD to fill the position of Associate Editor replacing Mariana Castells, MD, PhD, FACAAI.
  • Approved funding for CME consultant services to assist with ACCME reaccreditation efforts.
  • Approved the draft program for the ACAAI 2022 Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • Approved the Asthma Committee’s survey on the use of SMART therapy for distribution to College membership.
  • Reappointed David Golden, MD, FACAAI and Julie Wang, MD, FACAAI to a second five-year term as College representatives to the Joint Task Force on Practice Parameters; July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2027.
  • Approved the Joint Task Force on Practice Parameters’ request to change the JTFPP co-chair’s term to a single, non-renewable 4-year term.
  • Authorized the Joint Task Force on Practice Parameters to appoint workgroup members to update the Immunotherapy Practice Parameter in the traditional – not GRADE – style.
  • Approved the College’s endorsement of the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system.
  • Ratified the nomination of Mark Corbett, MD, FACAAI, Luz Fonacier, MD, FACAAI and Kevin Murphy, MD, FACAAI to serve on the WAO Board of Directors beginning in 2023.
  • Ratified the decision to allocate additional funding to cover necessary expenses for the previously approved PCP campaign initiative.
  • Established a three-year term limit – with the option to serve additional terms at the discretion of the ACAAI Board of Regents – for the position of the Advocacy Council’s Executive Director of Advocacy and Government Affairs.
  • Approved utilizing a formal application/review process for the selection of the Advocacy Council’s Executive Director of Advocacy and Government Affairs.
  • Ratified the establishment of an Academic-Community Allergy Initiative Task Force co-chaired by Kathleen May, MD, FACAAI and Gailen Marshall, Jr., MD, PhD, FACAAI to explore proposed methods to bring academic and community allergists closer together for educational and scholarly work to advance the specialty.
  • Sunset the Payer & Managed Care, Government Relations and Member Relations Committees effective Nov. 10, 2022.
  • Upon sunsetting the Payer/Managed Care Committee, transitioned the reporting Alternative Payments Subcommittee and all its current members to a stand-alone Alternative Payments Task Force.
  • Established a Drug Allergy Committee under the Science Council effective this November.
  • Allocated the necessary funds to hold an in-person breakfast meeting for chairs and vice chairs at the Annual Meeting in Louisville and to encourage committee chairs to consider meeting in-person at the Annual Meeting.
  • Approved adding the following copy to the ACAAI Bylaws, Article III. Board of Regents, Section 2. Board Composition: “The Annals Editor-in-Chief shall participate as an ex-officio, non-voting member for the duration of their term.” Authorized the Bylaws Committee to send notice of this proposed amendment to the voting members of the College no less than 15 days prior to the annual business meeting.
  • Approved the following slate of Officers and Regents for election at the 2022 Annual Business Meeting:
    • President-Elect – Gailen Marshall, Jr., MD, PhD, FACAAI
    • Vice President – James Tracy, DO, FACAAI
    • Treasurer – Cherie Zachary, MD, FACAAI
    • Regents – Jeremy Katcher, MD, FACAAI, Travis Miller, MD, FACAAI, Meagan Shepherd, MD, FACAAI
  • Approved honoring David Bernstein, MD, FACAAI and William Silvers, MD, FACAAI with the Distinguished Fellow Award; M. Antonella Muraro, MD, PhD with the International Distinguished Fellow Award; and John Seyerle, MD, FACAAI, Bill Finerfrock and Lelia Sublett with the Distinguished Service Award.
  • Approved honoring Vivian Hernandez-Trujillo, MD, FACAAI with the Woman in Allergy Award.
  • Appointed Todd Mahr, MD, FACAAI to the position of Executive Medical Director for a three-year term beginning January 1, 2023.
  • Requested the Yardstick Task Force to consider developing a yardstick on the Current Management of EOE with the inclusion of recently approved biologic therapies.
  • Designated Myron J. Zitt, MD, FACAAI, Marianne Frieri, MD, PhD, FACAAI and James L. Sublett, MD, FACAAI as final candidates for the 2022 Gold Headed Cane Award and include their names on the ballot that will be sent to College Fellows for voting.
  • Approved inviting Cherie Zachary, MD, FACAAI to deliver the Bela Schick Lecture at the 2022 Annual Meeting.
  • Approved distributing a follow-up statement pertaining to the Thomas E. Dobbs, et al. versus Jackson Women’s Health Organization, et al. Supreme Court ruling to all members, clarifying that the College does not support any rules, laws or government interference that compromise the integrity of the patient-physician relationship.
  • Requested the ACAAI President to reach out to ABAI’s leadership about a possible a joint statement pertaining to the Thomas E. Dobbs, et al. versus Jackson Women’s Health Organization, et al. Supreme Court ruling.
