How the College is embracing AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing healthcare, leaving many allergists wondering how to safely adapt to this technology. The College’s Executive Medical Director, Dr. Todd Mahr, shares what the College is doing to guide our specialty and highlights the practical tools members can use right now.

How is the College leveraging AI to support members?
We formed a new AI and Technology Subcommittee, chaired by Fatima Khan, MD, FACAAI, to directly address our members’ questions and clinical concerns surrounding AI. The subcommittee is already hard at work on several initiatives including collaborating with the AMA to publish an AI Evaluation Guide. This guide provides physicians with a reliable framework to evaluate AI applications and assess their safety, effectiveness, and clinical relevance – without needing technical expertise.

With AI constantly evolving, where should members start if they want to understand it better?
The College’s AI and Technology Subcommittee has made this incredibly easy by launching a series of bite-sized videos called AI Insights. They offer practical, real-world advice on how to safely start using AI in your day-to-day practice. The videos cover topics like scribing, researching clinical information, creating letters, writing an effective prompt, comparing AI models, creating patient education, and more. Most of the videos are less than five minutes! If you have more time and would like to have a great overview of AI, please watch the presentation Dr. Fatima Kahn presented at our Corporate Council meeting in early June. It is 22 minutes, but well worth the time!

What’s next for the College and AI?

The resources we have developed so far are just the beginning. The College will continue to provide updated resources to help members use AI to improve efficiency and accuracy in their practices. At the ACAAI Annual Scientific Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona there will be dedicated sessions on technological advances and practical clinical applications for AI. We encourage you to explore these opportunities at the Annual Meeting and look for additional resources in your inbox in the future.
