Pathways to Practice: Advancing Excellence One Fellow at a Time

There is a growing shortage of practicing allergists, jeopardizing timely and adequate care for millions of patients. To address this concern, ACAAI launched a new initiative to provide training support for 16 allergy/immunology fellows over a five-year period. This financial support from the College will fund additional slots in US allergy/immunology training programs.

In the 2024 National Resident Matching Program cycle, despite a high fill rate, 81 highly qualified applicants for allergy/immunology fellowships went unmatched, highlighting both the competitiveness of the field and the need for additional training positions.

With a strong emphasis on training allergists who will enter community-based practice, P2P will help strengthen access to specialized care nationwide. Selection will be highly competitive to ensure that funding is directed toward the most impactful programs. This initiative marks a critical step in shaping the future of our specialty and ensuring that more patients receive expert care from board-certified allergists.

“By providing financial support to accredited programs, we can expand training opportunities, increase the number of practicing allergists, and strengthen the specialty’s future.”

Program Overview

The Pathways to Practice (P2P) program continues the tradition of years past, when the College funded fellows’ training under the ACORN program. P2P will fund up to $125,000 per trainee per year, for two years (i.e., $250,000 per trainee). Four slots are being offered/funded by the College each year for five years to enable the training of 16 new fellowship-trained allergists.

Training program directors apply on behalf of their institution. Both the training program and the designated fellows/trainees must meet certain eligibility criteria and fulfill certain requirements. Funds that are awarded to a program may be used to sustain current unfunded fellowship positions (preferred) or to increase the number of slots in their program.

The applying fellowship training program must be fully accredited by the ACGME and considered “in good standing.” The training program director applicant must have been a College member for at least two years at the time of application.
