Pathways to Practice Eligibility Criteria and Requirements

Requirements for Training Program Directors and Institutions

Accreditation and Good Standing

  • The applying fellowship program must be fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and considered in good standing (not on probation).

Institutional Commitment

  • A letter of support must be provided from the department chair (Pediatrics or Internal Medicine) confirming institutional backing of an additional fellowship trainee.

Institutional Need

  • The institution must complete the online application describing the need for an additional funded fellowship position and how the institution will support the fellow-in-training.

Program Participation and Engagement

  • The training program director must be an active member of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) for at least two years prior to application submission.
  • Key faculty at the institution must be ACAAI members or have an application in process.
  • The training program director must participate in the ACAAI Annual Meeting and ACAAI Training Program Directors Meeting.
  • The training program must demonstrate that its previous fellows-in-training have regularly attended the ACAAI Annual Meeting by providing a list of participants and their involvement at the meeting over the last five years.
  • The training program director must attest to their program’s educational leave policy outlining opportunities for fellows-in-training to attend national educational meetings, including the ACAAI Annual Meeting.

Award Utilization

  • The funding must support a two-year clinical fellowship position (not a third-year research fellowship).
  • Awards can be used for programs seeking to sustain current unfunded fellowship positions or increase their current fellowship slots.
  • The award is to be used for direct costs including the fellow-in-training’s salary, benefits, CME/meeting attendance and educational books/subscriptions.
  • Indirect costs, if necessary, may not exceed 10% of the total award.

Award Frequency and Limitations

  • Each institution may receive funding for only one fellow-in-training per three-year cycle to ensure broad distribution across programs.
  • Preference will be given to programs that have unfunded positions.

Requirements for Fellow-in-Training Candidates

Board Eligibility and Specialty Background

  • The designated/supported fellow-in-training must be a physician (MD or DO) who is ABMS or AOA board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine and/or Pediatrics.

Commitment to the Field and ACAAI Participation

  • The fellow-in-training must be an ACAAI member or agree to become a member upon acceptance.
  • The fellow-in-training must submit at least one abstract to the ACAAI Annual Meeting during their fellowship training.
  • The fellow-in-training must attend at least one ACAAI Annual Meeting during their fellowship training.

U.S. Practice Commitment

  • Preference will be given to fellows-in-training intending to practice Allergy/Immunology in the United States after graduation.

Accountability Requirements

Progress/Interim Report

Approximately 12 months after receipt of the P2P grant (June), the fellowship training program director must provide ACAAI with a written interim report detailing the fellow’s training experience and progress. An ACGME annual evaluation report will suffice. The interim report should include how much of the award was spent during the academic year and include a short explanation if spend differs materially from plan.

Final Report

Approximately 24 months after receipt of the P2P grant, the fellowship training program director must provide ACAAI with a written, final report that addresses the following:

  • Confirmation the P2P award was used for direct costs including the fellow-in-training’s salary, benefits, CME/meeting attendance and educational resources (and with no more than 10% used for overhead costs).
  • Information confirming the fellow-in-training maintained his/her ACAAI membership over the last two years and participated in the two most recent ACAAI Annual Meetings. Please also outline any additional involvement in other ACAAI meetings/activities.
  • Information confirming the fellowship training program director maintained his/her ACAAI membership over the last two years, participated in the two most recent ACAAI Annual Meetings, and participated in the Joint Program Director’s Annual Winter Meeting.
  • Details about any publications in which the fellow-in-training was cited as one of the authors (or as a senior author). Include the name of the publication, article title and publication date.
  • Information regarding whether the fellow-in-training has formally accepted a post-fellowship position. Please include the type of position, the name of the hiring organization and the city/state where the graduated fellow will be working.
  • Please also provide a short statement (3 – 5 sentences) about how the P2P grant has strengthened your clinic, allowed you to treat more patients, and/or contributed to financial growth and sustainability of your training program.

Scholarly Contributions

  • The fellow must acknowledge ACAAI P2P funding in publications and presentations, and submit scholarly work to the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology for right of first refusal.

Ongoing Evaluation and Compliance

  • ACAAI reserves the right to audit funded programs to ensure compliance with the grant terms.
  • Failure to meet reporting requirements may result in disqualification from future funding cycles.

Award Structure and Use of Funds:

  • The award is a fixed-amount grant designed to fully support a fixed 24-month A/I fellowship.
  • Movement of unspent funds from Year 1 to Year 2 is permitted within that 24-month window without prior approval.
  • Funds may not be used beyond 24 months (for example, not to support a third fellowship year).
  • If more than 10% of the total award is projected to remain unspent 90 days before the end date, we ask that a brief spending plan be submitted for approval describing how the remaining funds will be used before closeout.
  • The College requests return of funds only in cases of material non-compliance (such as missed reporting, program closure, or inability to fill the fellowship slot) or failure to provide required annual reports.
  • The College reserves the right to review and audit any program funded under this grant to ensure compliance with all grant terms.
