ACAAI Executive Medical Director Todd Mahr, MD, FACAAI, shines a light on how to make the most of your committee service in the year ahead.
Where do you see the most viable opportunities for committees to advance the College’s mission in the coming year?
Many members don’t realize how many times we get inquiries and materials that need committee input. I routinely ask committee chairs and vice chairs for their input on specific issues and requests. The requests are coming in because the organizations and the government agencies value the College’s input. As we follow our strategic plan, committees play a vital role in helping us to navigate the changes we are looking to make. What I find interesting is the many times we get a comprehensive, well-rounded response from committees on questions and requests. It shows me that the College is representing our members, who have a diversity of needs.
What valuable skills can members develop by serving on a committee?
Teamwork is one of the primary benefits, but also collaboration, as sometimes committees work together on a project. If desired, moving up into leadership roles is also another thing that is valuable, and we look at those members who have participated in our Leadership Summit first to take the lead. Being a committee vice chair and then chair helps members develop good leadership skills, which is what is sought when advancing members into further leadership tracts.
What tips would you give to members for balancing committee responsibilities and other commitments?
Ideally, do not hesitate to ask for help, if you’re over-extended and need help – please ask, rather than just not participating or not accomplishing a task. Up front, you need to look at your individual “bandwidth,” so to speak, and before saying yes, realize just what responsibilities you are being asked to do. All committees have great College staff assigned to them and they can also be a valuable resource.
