Jay Lieberman, MD, FACAAI, chair of the Food Allergy Committee, recently attended a meeting at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regarding peanut containing products and the Women, Infants and Children’s (WIC) Program criteria.
This event was organized by the National Peanut Board.
Dr. Lieberman was one of four physicians (three allergists and a pediatrician), along with a registered dietician and one community member (a mother of children with food allergies), who gave testimony to Deputy Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services, Stacy Dean.
Dr. Lieberman provided testimony on clinical data and health economics data supporting the early introduction of peanut containing foods into infants’ diets. The data supported the importance of potentially decreasing peanut allergy in our population. Under Secretary Dean was interested in learning how the USDA can help to further educate families on the importance of safely introducing peanut containing foods into infants’ diets.
This is the latest example of opportunities identified by the Advocacy Council to highlight the expertise of allergists to help form national policy.
