Making the most of your volunteer experience

Do you want to be more involved with your committee? Here are a few tips on making the most of your experience:

  • Attend all committee meetings – whether you meet in person, over the phone or online, make an effort to engage with members of your committee. If you are not able to make a meeting, touch base with your chair (or staff) to see what you have missed and how you may be able to contribute.
  • Share your insights to expand the conversation – regardless of your level of expertise or position in your career, don’t hesitate to offer your unique perspective.
  • Be proactive and claim ownership of committee goals/activities – offer to take on a task that relates to your expertise or challenges you to learn something new.

Do you struggle to find your voice? Initiate a phone conversation with your chair to discuss how you can take a more active role in your committee’s activities. This will give you an opportunity to share your background and interests and brainstorm ideas for your involvement.

Get additional tips by attending our committee orientation on Oct. 17 with Todd Mahr, MD, FACAAI, the College’s executive medical director. He will walk you through the College’s strategic priorities and means to enhance your committee experience.
