Honoring our 2024 awardees

The College is pleased to announce the recipients of our 2024 awards. The Gold Headed Cane Award will be presented during the Annual Meeting Opening Ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 26. Other honorees will be recognized at the Annual Business Meeting on Sunday, Oct. 27.

Gold Headed Cane
ACAAI President Gailen D. Marshall, Jr, MD, FACAAI will present the Gold Headed Cane Award to Luz S. Fonacier, MD, FACAAI for demonstrating the highest standards of scientific excellence and integrity. Dr. Fonacier is Professor, Department of Medicine at the NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine in New York. She was ACAAI President in 2020-21 and the recipient of the ACAAI Women in Allergy Award in 2009.

Distinguished Fellow Awards
This year’s Distinguished Fellow Awards are presented to Alnoor A. Malick, MD, FACAAI of Houston, Texas and Luz S. Fonacier, MD, FACAAI of Mineola, New York. This award is given in recognition of outstanding contributions and commitment in the United States or Canada on behalf of the specialty of allergy.

International Distinguished Fellow Award
The recipient of this year’s International Distinguished Fellow Award is Elham M. Hossny, MD of Cairo, Egypt. This award is given in recognition of outstanding contributions and commitment on behalf of allergy in the recipient’s respective country.

Distinguished Service Awards
This year’s Distinguished Service Awards are presented to Mitchell H. Grayson, MD, FACAAI of Columbus, Ohio, Gerald B. Lee, MD, FACAAI of Atlanta, Georgia and Jay A. Lieberman, MD, FACAAI of Memphis, Tennessee. This award is given in recognition of tireless efforts, dedication and enthusiasm on behalf of the College.

Woman in Allergy Award
The recipient of this year’s Woman in Allergy Award is Marcella R. Aquino, MD, FACAAI of Providence, Rhode Island. This annual award honors an individual who has advanced the role of women in medicine or made a significant contribution to the specialty.

Clemens von Pirquet Awards
This year’s Clemens von Pirquet Awards are presented to Krishnan D. Chhiba, MD, PhD (first place), Phillip J. Link, MD (second place), and Charlene M. Dunaway Altamirano, MD, PhD (third place). These awards are presented to three Fellows-in Training each year for their outstanding abstracts.

Executive Medical Director Award
The College honors Gina L. Steiner, MS, of Arlington Heights, Illinois, who is ACAAI Director of Communications. This award is in recognition of her effective management of the College’s communications activities.

Annals Distinguished Author Awards
Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology recognizes Hugh Sampson, MD, FACAAI of New York, New York, Thomas Bieber, MD, PhD, MDRA of Davos, Switzerland and William Busse, MD of Madison, Wisconsin for their contributions to the fields of allergy, asthma and immunology.

Annals FIT Awards
The recipients of the 2024 ACAAI Annals Fellow-In-Training Awards are Rebecca C. Koenigsberg, DO (first place) and Lisa Biswas, MD (second place). The awards recognize outstanding original research or an excellent review in Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology written by a Fellow-in-Training.

Education Council Award
The 2024 Education Council Award recipient is David A. Khan, MD, FACAAI of Dallas, Texas. This award honors an individual that has made a demonstrable impact on advancing training and professional education in the field of allergy and immunology.
