The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, recently issued a statement explaining the FDA is considering labeling products that contain sesame to help protect people who have allergies. Currently, sesame is not among the major allergens that are required to be disclosed on food ingredient lists.
And that’s where you come in! The FDA wants to collect information on the prevalence and severity of sesame allergies in the U.S., as well as the prevalence of sesame-containing foods sold. They’re hoping to hear from allergy researchers and allergists, along with epidemiologists, nutritionists and other physicians, regarding their clinical experiences and relevant findings. All of this information will help inform their next steps.
