Defend the allergy specialty

J. Wesley Sublett, MD, FACAAI, Advocacy Council Chair

Over the years, allergists/immunologists have had to overcome many obstacles to move forward as a profession. We’ve fought for more and better CPT codes to describe what we do. We fought against erroneous USP rules, but when USP decides to update Chapter <797>, it’s likely we’ll be fighting again for our rights to continue preparing allergenic extract in our offices.

Now, we must also address the unfair and burdensome restrictions imposed by insurance carriers. Payers use augmented intelligence to create pre-payment denials and delays, which includes deliberate distortion of the CPT and Medicare’s definition of a dose. Other tactics include  burdensome requests for unnecessary documentation and changes in reimbursement policies. The list of issues grows longer each day, and our need to defend the allergy specialty is critical! All of these issues threaten our practices, our specialty, and our livelihoods.

Great advocacy takes time, coordination, communication, persistence, and resolve. During the College’s Annual Scientific Meeting, leaders spoke about many of the issues and obstacles allergists/immunologists and our specialty face. These issues will not be resolved unless we take action, and the solutions won’t come easily. Your Advocacy Council leaders will take on these tasks, but we need your help.

Defend the allergy specialty – DASH – is the College’s Advocacy Council mantra as we continue to fight for our patients and the future of our specialty. DASH is your chance  to be part of the solution.

The Advocacy Council will advocate with legislators. We will meet with leaders in the insurance industry. We will help you engage patients to join the fight. The Advocacy Council is working for our specialty, our patients, and you – all  across the country. We ask all of you to help provide the funds we need to carry out this work by contributing to DASH.

We need to continue to Defend the Allergy Specialty (DASH), but we need YOUR $UPPORT.

We’ve got to act now, and we’ve got to act together!

You can help us TODAY by making a contribution. Help us fight for our patients. Help us fight for the future of our specialty. Help us fight for you!
