The College has taken a strong stand against proposed cuts to funding that would cap indirect costs for NIH research grants at 15%. In addition to in-person advocacy to members of Congress last week opposing the cuts, the College sent a letter to NIH Acting Director Matthew Memoli, MD, to voice opposition to the cuts. J. Allen Meadows, MD, the Advocacy Council’s Executive Director of Advocacy and Governmental Affairs said, “Research is the future of allergy and immunology. Cuts this drastic cannot be absorbed overnight. We stand firm with our colleagues doing the research.” Even though the cuts are on a temporary hold, the Advocacy Council will continue to monitor this situation, as well as any other threats to research funding, and take action as is appropriate.
Update: As of this writing, the Federal Registry has been closed, which means NIH study sections and advisory councils cannot hold meetings to discuss proposals and make grant application decisions. There is no scheduled date to reopen the Registry, but the Advocacy Council will continue to monitor the situation and advise membership of any news.
