American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology – Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Open Access support program

American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology – Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Open Access support program
  • As of July 2025, National Institutes of Health (NIH) has required publications from NIH funded research to be made publicly available at the time of publication.
  • For many journals this requires payment of an open access fee, which can be quite significant (currently $3400 for Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology).
  • Since NIH grants run 4-5 years, many investigators have not yet budgeted for the increased cost of open access.
  • The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) is supporting a new trial program to support open access for NIH funded research in Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology and will cover the open access fee for certain submissions.
  • To be eligible the research must be funded by NIH grants for which there are insufficient funds budgeted for open access.
    • Authors should indicate in their cover letter at the time of submission that they would like to participate in this open access program.
    • The cover letter should clearly state that the authors do not have sufficient funding in their current grant budget to cover the open access fee.
    • The editorial office will determine if the submission meets the requirements and if the initiative will cover the cost of open access, and authors will be notified of the open access program decision rapidly after submission.
    • Significant funding is available from ACAAI, and it is estimated that most requests will be honored.
  • This program only applies to original research (submitted as in an Original Article or Letter format) that is NIH funded. Reviews, editorials, correspondence or any other article type that is not NIH funded original research (regardless of whether the authors are NIH funded) are not eligible for this program.
