2025 CA2PER Grantees

Wanda Phipatanakul, MD, MS, FACAAI and Jordan E. Scott, MD, received the 2025 CA2PER grant for their project, “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence to Predict Side Effects and Treatment Outcomes in Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) for Patients With Food Allergies.” Read more about their project in the Spring 2025 issue of College Advantage (See page 17) and listen to their interview with Gailen D. Marshall, Jr., MD, PhD, FACAAI, 2023-2024 ACAAI President.

The grantees credit Thinh (Henry) Hoang Nguyen, MD, PhD, Dr. Phipatanakul’s Fellow-in-Training, with sparking the inspiration for their project. This is a great example of an early-career allergist playing a key role in initiating new grant-funded research.

“I was inspired by the CA2PER program’s vision of bridging academic research and private practice… I believe patients would greatly benefit if we could both standardize the process of oral immunotherapy (OIT) and provide clear information about expected outcomes, such as the likelihood of side effects or how quickly dosing can be escalated. I see an opportunity to use machine learning–based predictive modeling to tailor regimens for individual patients. Coupling this with immunophenotyping before and after OIT could help us better identify which patients are at higher risk for complications and which might benefit from a more aggressive approach… I strongly believe research and clinical care should go hand in hand to ensure patients can receive the best care with the most up-to-date therapies, and I view this initiative as a meaningful step toward that goal.”
