Starting Jan. 1, if you do not use Medicare’s new Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers (MBIs) on Medicare claims, you will not be paid. Regardless of the date of service, without an MBI, Medicare will:
- Reject all claims (with a few exceptions)
- Reject all eligibility transactions
Currently only 87% of Medicare claims are being submitted with MBIs, so some practices may be in for an unpleasant surprise in January. Make sure your allergy practice is prepared and start using MBIs now. Ask patients for their MBI card or get MBIs through Medicare Administrative Contractor portals. You can also find MBIs on remittance advice.
