Try your hand at workshops

There’s nothing like hands-on experience to help you learn a new concept or diagnostic test. Being able to observe as well as perform has benefits ranging from increased retention to risk mitigation. That’s why, at this year’s Annual Scientific Meeting, Nov. 15-19, we’re offering a selection of hands-on workshops that you can add on to your registration.

Hands-on workshops include:

  • Hands-on: The Use of Case Simulation for the Education of Allergic Emergencies: Anaphylaxis, Nov. 17, 3:00 – 4:30 pm: Studies have demonstrated that hands-on practice offered by case simulations is more effective than standard classroom instruction for emergency situational training. With that in mind, this workshop tackles what to do in an anaphylaxis emergency. Learn how you can prepare your office, mock drills you can practice with your staff, as well as how to diagnose, manage and prevent anaphylaxis. Speakers include Julie Brown, MD, Marcella Aquino, MD, FACAAI, Aleena Banerji, MD, and Anne Ellis, MD, MSc, FACAAI.
  • Didactic: Introductory Course in Rhinolaryngoscopy, Nov. 18, 10:00 – 11:30 am: This workshop will provide attendees with the ability to discuss the surgical anatomy of the upper airway, including the nasal cavity, pharynx and larynx; identify normal and abnormal anatomy, as well as disease presentations and post-operative changes found with endoscopic examination of the upper airway; and identify the indications for, and the use of, the fiber-optic rhinoscope in the allergist's office. Speakers include Jerald Koepke, MD, FACAAI, and Seong Cho, MD, FACAAI.
  • Hands-on Session in Rhinolaryngoscopy: Introductory, Nov. 18, 1:00 – 2:30 pm: Learn the basics of rhinolaryngoscopy and try it out for yourself at this workshop. Attendees will learn how to describe the major anatomical structures of the nasal, pharyngeal and glottic areas as visualized during examination; describe variations of normal seen when participants examine one another; and demonstrate the proper handling and initial skills needed to perform a comprehensive upper airway examination with a fiber-optic endoscope. Speakers include: Seong Cho, MD, FACAAI, Kevin Murphy, MD, FACAAI, Grant Olson, MD, FACAAI, Donald Pulver, MD, FACAAI, and C. Ross Westley, MD, FACAAI.
  • Hands-on Session in Rhinolaryngoscopy: Intermediate/Advanced, Nov. 18, 3:00 – 4:30 pm: Learn how to better navigate the recesses of the nasal airway and larynx by acquiring more advanced skills with a fiber-optic endoscope. More confidently identify major structures of the nasal, pharyngeal and glottic areas are visualized during an exam. Discuss challenging cases or problems you have encountered when during this procedure. To participate in this intermediate/advanced workshop, you must:
    • Have taken the Introductory Rhinolaryngoscopy Course at a prior meeting or have received similar training.
    • Have a basic working knowledge of the nasal and laryngeal anatomy.
    • Be familiar with the use of and have performed examinations with a flexible fiber-optic rhinoscope.
    • Be willing to be examined by course participants.
    • Speakers include: Jerald Koepke, MD, FACAAI, Seong Cho, MD, FACAAI, Kevin Murphy, MD, FACAAI, Donald Pulver, MD, FACAAI, and C. Ross Westley, MD, FACAAI.
  • Patch Test, Wraps, Ointments, Biopsy, Nov. 18, 3:00 – 4:30 pm: This hands-on workshop demonstrates techniques in dermatology: patch testing, skin biopsy, physical urticaria challenges and wet wraps. Some case studies may be used to set the stage, but the focus will be hands-on stations. Attendees may select the stations of their choice. Speakers include: Luz Fonacier, MD, FACAAI, Sharon Jacob, MD, Anil Nanda, MD, FACAAI and David Weldon, MD, FACAAI.

When you register for the Annual Meeting, add one (or more) of these great workshops to your schedule! You’ll get to practice these techniques, first-hand, and leave ready to implement them perfectly in your own practice.
