College committees are collaborating to create personalized PA letters

The College is focused on providing members with practice management resources that address their most pressing needs.  The Practice Management Committee leads these efforts and frequently partners with other committees to ensure members are provided with the resources and support they need. This includes an ongoing collaboration with the College’s science committees to create evidence-based, HIPAA-compliant prior authorization (PA) appeal letters for a variety of drug/diseases combinations.

“Prior authorization can be particularly burdensome for practices,” said Melinda Rathkopf, MD, MBA, FACAAI, chair of the Practice Management Committee. “We want to help ease those administrative burdens by creating resources that can really streamline this process. We now have letter generators for 13 drug/diseases combinations that we update and expand as needed. Members can use these tools to create customized appeal letters in under 10 minutes.”

When developing new PA appeal letters (or updating existing ones), the Practice Management Committee seeks expertise from various committees under the Science Council.  Most recently, they  joined forces with the Asthma Committee to create a SMART/Asthma PA appeal letter that is now part of the Prior Authorization Toolkit.  They have also teamed up with the Anaphylaxis Committee to develop a Neffy/Anaphylaxis PA appeal letter, which is now available.

These collaborative efforts leverage the expertise of each committee and allow for sharing of tasks such as:

  • Summarizing the recommended medication and its benefits.
  • Identifying alternative medications to treat the disease.
  •  Gathering evidence (journal articles, medical references, guidelines, practice parameters, etc.) to support the use of the recommended medication.

This partnership exemplifies how College committees can effectively work together to create practical, evidence-based tools that address important challenges for our members and make a lasting impact on their ability to provide quality patient care.
