College support shines at the Hong Kong Allergy Convention

The Hong Kong Institute of Allergy (HKIA) held its 9th Biennial Convention on Oct. 8-9 by preparing an exceptionally strong scientific program by expert world renowned speakers. ACAAI President, Bryan Martin, DO, FACAAI, gave two well-received presentations on “Immunotherapy, the American Perspective” and “Anaphylaxis Recognition, Reaction and Risk Reduction.” Past-President Sami Bahna, MD, DrPH, FACAAI, presented on “Difficulties in Food Allergy Diagnosis.”

Other speakers were the president, vice president and past president of the European Academy of Allergy & Clinical Immunology, the president of the British Society of Allergy & Clinical Immunology, the director of the Swiss Institute of Allergy & Asthma Research, and several local and regional experts.

Dr. Martin made a presentation on the College during the opening ceremony that included the Honorable Dr. Wing-Man Ko, Secretary for Food and Health, the program’s chair professor Tak-Hong Lee, MD, and the HKIA Secretary-General Dr. Helen Chan, MD, FACAAI.  The College’s long-standing support to the HKIA was very well recognized throughout the program; on the banners, in the printed program and at the podium. 

This year’s program included a celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the HKIA during which Dr. Bahna was honored with the President’s Medal Award – established for the first time. Dr. Bahna assisted the HKIA in planning its first allergy convention in 1998 and has been an invited speaker since.

During the Award Ceremony, Dr. Bahna was introduced by the program’s chair professor Dr. Tak-Hong Lee and the Institute’s Secretary General Dr. Helen Chan, who stated “Even before the inauguration of the HKIA, Dr. Bahna has been coming to Hong Kong to support us incessantly for over twenty years as a constant speaker at our conventions. Indeed, Dr. Bahna is a mentor of our Institute.”  With much appreciation of the prestigious award, Dr. Bahna responded, “It is nice getting something I don’t deserve!”
