The Advocacy Council has worked closely with Congressman Ro Khanna (D-CA) and his staff to advocate for increased funding for food allergy research. Working together, we were successful in having food allergies added to the Department of Defense’s Peer Reviewed Medical Research (PRMR) Program’s list of conditions eligible to be studied. In addition, the budget for the PRMR program was increased by $10 Million for Fiscal Year 2020.
As part of Labor, Health and Human Services appropriations, Representative Khanna and his colleagues secured a $362 million increase in the budget for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
In the Committee Report that accompanies the bill and provides guidance on how Congress expects the money to be spent, there is language directing investment in funding for the Consortium of Food Allergy Research. The Advocacy Council and the 32 million Americans who deal with food allergies appreciate the work of Representative Khanna and his staff on securing this important funding.
