ACA and MACRA – they are not one and the same!
With the recent changes in Congress and the executive branch, it’s a challenge to keep track of the changes to health care reform. If you are confused about all the crazy health care acronyms, you are not alone. A recent poll by Morning Consult revealed more than one third of Americans did not know Obamacare and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) are one and the same.
It’s important for practices to understand the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) is NOT part of the ACA. Any repeal/reform of the ACA will not impact MACRA.
MACRA repealed the flawed sustainable growth rate and created two new payment pathways for clinicians: The Merit Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and Alternative Payment Models (APMs).
As a result, you’ll want to figure out how MACRA will impact your practice in 2017. MIPS became effective on Jan. 1, so you should determine if you are required to report, and if so, evaluate your options. Check out the College’s MACRA resource guide for 2017, as well as the College MACRA, MIPS and APMs overview. Future College Insider articles will give more details on MIPS reporting options.
